EURAM Conference 2015 - Call for Papers

  * * * APOLOGIES FOR CROSSPOSTING * * *

Dear EURAM members and friends,

The next EURAM conference will take place in Warsaw (Poland) between the 17th and the 20th of June 2015. The theme of the conference, Uncertainty is a great opportunity, is aimed to open an interesting and fruitful dialogue about why contemporary management theory and practice do not adequately address the phenomenon of uncertainty, which has come to characterise our daily lives. The EURAM 2015 conference will explore this concept in an opportunity-seeking framework. Uncertainty can be both a threat and an opportunity for organisations. The positive response to the challenge of opportunity is the most constructive stand that we can take, and one that also may equip us best to deal with further challenges that the future may bring.

The dominant stream of thoughts tells us to safeguard against uncertainty, although on both theoretical and practical grounds we should ask if that is possible. Uncertainty is seen as an unpredictable force that can jeopardise our organising efforts. Uncertainty is supposed to leave us in the dark and not knowing what to expect and when. Moreover, the uncertainty that we are living in today is not limited to financial markets, economic and socio-political macro environments. In the age of hyper connectivity the uncertainty we are facing is evident in virtually all areas of the organisational life.

We will endeavour to respond to the following questions: How and in which ways do the drivers of uncertainty change? What resources do organisations need to develop in order to capture the changes that uncertainty may bring? Which organisational forms and configurations respond better to the challenges of uncertainty? What concept of leadership is most suited to steer organisations through the waves of unexpected and unpredictable storms? How can we better educate people to make them more competent individuals who are confident with uncertainty? How should organisations manage their boundaries in order to be able to absorb changes that uncertainty causes? Are the concepts that we already seem to know well such as innovation, knowledge, intellectual capital, leadership, responsibility, sustainability, diversity assuming new meanings at the time of uncertainty?

Warsaw is the ideal venue for such debates. It is located geographically, culturally and intellectually on the crossroads between East and West, North and South. The tormented history of Central and Eastern Europe, and Poland in particular, provides the most persuasive lessons of transition and of coping with uncertainty. These lessons are encrypted in people's minds, in management practices, and in the body of research. When confronted with Western management, such a "genius loci" is capable of producing synergistic effects that we, as our community of engaged scholars, are looking for.

http://uef.fi/en/atmc2015

We look forward to seeing you and your colleagues in this astonishing part of Finland in order to make new friendships...

WHAT IS ATMC? From Past to Future

As unique as its name in the field, the initiative of the Advances in Tourism Marketing Conference (ATMC) started in 2005. Its first meeting was held in Akyaka (Turkey), and attended by  more than 70 researchers and practitioners from more than 15 different countries. The second conference was held in Valencia, Spain, in 2007. It was coordinated by the University of Valencia (Spain) and MuglaUniversity (Turkey with the University of Otago (New Zealand) joining forces. That conference attracted over 200 attendees. This was followed by the induction of BournemouthUniversity (2009, UK, 230 attendees), University of Maribor (2011, Slovenia, 90 attendees), University of Algarve (2013, Portugal, 140 attendees) and University of Eastern Finland (2015, Finland) respectively.

As its mission, ATMC aims to bring together researchers, PhD candidates, policy makers and practitioners to provide a forum for the discussion and dissemination of themes related to marketing travel and tourism, and to critically evaluate how they may contribute to advancing knowledge and practices in the field. In addition to this general goal, each conference is charged with a topical theme and to provide both scholars and practitioners with an opportunity to engage and explore that theme in a series of focal discussions. While offering a general forum for issues in tourism marketing and behaviour research, the forum created around themes distinguishes the ATMC conferences from others.

Themes –

While focusing on updating and canvassing topical issues in international tourism marketing, it has become a tradition of ATMC to create a specific theme for every conference. Each theme is drawn from the conclusions of the preceding meeting, trends in the tourism industry, and priorities in tourism marketing research.

Hence, the 2007 ATMC aimed to analyze "Destination and Event Marketing: Managing Networks", a topic of high relevance to researchers, public institutions, the tourist industry and other stakeholders (tourists, local community, media, among others).

The 2009 Conference had a specific interest in "Marketing Innovations for Sustainable Tourism Destinations: Operations, Interactions, Experiences". This conference had a particularly strong industry-focus with many practitioners participating.

Under the conference theme of "Transforming Experiences: Tourism Marketing from both Sides of the Counter", the 2011 ATMC set out to build on the success of the three previous conferences. Participants benefited particularly from an integrated analysis of host-guest interactions.

The 2013 ATMC created another specific theme of "Marketing Spaces and Places" in order to highlight the differing ways that tourists learn about and engage with residents' places.

The 2015 ATMC has a clear focus on "Tourism engagement: co-creating well-being".  Again highlighting host-guest interactions, this conference focuses on creating well—being for all stakeholders.

Publications –

With the interest and support from internationally well-recognized publishers, ATMC has created an additional tradition and mission namely to publish an edited volume for each conference by selecting a number of high-calibre papers presented at the conference.

As a direct result of the first conference held in Turkey, Kozak and Andreu published the book Progress in Tourism Marketing (Elsevier, 2006). Kozak, Gnoth and Andreu then published the book Advances in Destination Marketing (Routledge, 2008) which was a direct response to papers presented at the Valencia Conference in 2007; Fyall, Kozak, Andreu, Gnoth and Lebe then published the book Marketing Innovations for Sustainable Destinations (Goodfellow Publishers, 2009) with papers presented at the Bournemouth Conference in 2009. With the inclusion of a selected list of papers out of the Maribor Conference in 2011, Kozak, Andreu, Gnoth and Lebe edited the book Tourism Marketing: Both Sides of the Counter (Cambridge Publishing Scholars, 2012). The editorial team (Gnoth, Correia, Kozak & Fyall) has now completed editing another book proposal entitled Marketing Spaces and Places including t papers presented at the Algarve Conference in 2013 (Emerald, 2015).

To summarise, the ATMC moves on the right track to explore, analyze, and evaluate the state of the art in tourism marketing from an international perspective, and to bring together researchers, policy makers and practitioners. The ATMC provides a forum for the discussion and dissemination of themes related to the tourism system under a marketing approach.

Therefore, the initiative of ATMC represents an important contribution for tourism marketing as a particular research field. The general outcome of the ATMC focuses on facilitating the analysis and interchange of sustainable approaches and international practices as a basis for knowledge and innovation management in tourism marketing. Having grown every other year in number, the conference advisory board still works towards its mission announced in its first series and conveys its responsibility to strengthen the field of tourism marketing by keeping its focus on updating and topical issues:

… We hope that the conference attendants will return to their academic institutions and home countries feeling intellectually enriched and will also continue to contribute to this growing field and meet every two year in a different destination…

To date, ATMC has attracted the presentation of papers with a diverse variety of research topics authored or co-authored by over 1,000 scholars and practitioners representing almost every single part of the world.  The conferences also hosted over 25 internationally well-respected scholars and practitioners who, invited as the keynote speakers contributed to the themed discussion. It is inspiring to see how the ATMC family has expanded both in quality and quantity, how it has created new friendships and networks and how it promises to continue to keep up its standards.

ATMC Advisory Board

Call For Papers: Journal of Financial Management, Markets and Institutions (JFMI) Special Issue on Financial Literacy

Call For Papers
Journal of Financial Management, Markets and Institutions (JFMI) Special Issue on Financial Literacy

GUEST EDITORS:
Paola Bongini, University of Milan-Bicocca (IT), Luca Colombo (Universita Cattolica di Milano), Malgorzata Iwanicz-Drozdowska (Warsaw School of Economics)

In recent years, financial literacy has gained the attention of a wide range of organizations, both at the national level - policymakers and financial regulatory authorities - and at the international level (OECD, World Bank). Interested groups are concerned that consumers may lack the minimum knowledge of financial concepts to be able to make informed financial decisions in their day-by-day life, namely: budgeting; managing effectively their money, credit and debt; assessing needs for insurance and protection; evaluating the different risks and returns involved in savings and investment options; saving for long-term goals. Financial crises intensify the risks that less financially literate consumers face: lacking the sophistication required to absorb financial shocks, they are more vulnerable to financial market fluctuation. While financial literacy studies have not a long tradition, a rapidly growing body of research - both in economics and social sciences - has now been devoted to the assessment of financial literacy metrics and financial education programs.

Researchers in economics, public policy, consumer sciences, education, business, marketing, social work, sociology, psychology, communication and related fields are encouraged to submit papers focusing on financial literacy - a combination of awareness, knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior which are necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve individual financial well-being. Proposals should be research oriented, and could include empirical research or rigorous case-study research.

TOPICS: Research topics for the special issue may include but are not limited to:
- Assessment of financial literacy: evaluations of metrics, survey questions, and methodologies to effectively measure financial literacy
- Financial information seeking behavior: optimal combinations of financial information, advice, regulation, disclosure, and delivery mechanisms, including default options, and their impact on starting and maintaining positive financial habits
- Financial literacy pre-requisites: types of knowledge that best motivate and facilitate financial action, and how such knowledge is acquired
- Financial literacy and potential gaps: the role of diversity (gender, ethnicity, age, education) in building financial awareness
- Financial literacy and barriers: the importance of financial literacy and financial education programs in reducing barriers to accessing credit and financial services
- Financial literacy in the work place: financial education programs for employees on retirement and investing
- School-based financial literacy: preparing youth and their families to plan for their futures, save for retirement and other long term goals, and/or successfully manage their credit and debt
- Financial education programs: evaluations of the delivery of financial education programs that identify effective approaches, delivery channels, and other resources that enhance effectiveness; exploring how games and simulations, on-line learning platforms, mobile applications, and other technology-based financial education and information tools can be used to deliver effective financial knowledge and skills

PAPER SUBMISSION PROCEDURE: Manuscripts must be submitted electronically from July 31, 2014 to December 5th, 2014 at the following web page address: http://jfmi.univpm.it/index.php/jfmi/user/register
