Call for Papers: Special Issue on Knowledge Management

Dear colleagues,

This call for papers for a special issue on Knowledge Management for the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events may be of interest to some.

With the usual apologies for cross-posting.

Best wishes

Jan Mosedale

Call for papers for a special issue on Knowledge Management for the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events

1. The guest editors

This special issue will be guest edited by:

Jan Mosedale, Senior Lecturer and Senior Researcher, University of Applied Sciences HTW Chur, Switzerland

Wolfgang Semar, Professor, University of Applied Sciences HTW Chur, Switzerland

2. What is the special issue about?

In today's information and knowledge society (Castells 2011) the creation of value in enterprise is largely based on the use of knowledge. Due to increasing competition, the factor knowledge has become more relevant, some even referring to knowledge as the fourth production factor (Stewart 2010). The ability to identify, to acquire, to create, to transfer and to apply knowledge within an organisation or on the market in the form of new products and services, thus represent key skills and essential competitive factors. For organisations to remain functional, it is imperative that knowledge is distributed and used freely.

The main bulk of the tourism literature on knowledge has focused on knowledge transfer and the capacity to absorb knowledge (see for instance Shaw & Williams 2009; Baggio & Cooper 2010; Thomas 2012). Although there are some notable exceptions (see for instance Cooper (2006) for a model or Nadkarni (2008) for a case study), the aim of this special issue is to provide a detailed holistic analysis of knowledge management including the use of knowledge (Xiao & Smith 2007).

We therefore invite submissions of both conceptual and empirical papers offering new insights into the broader area of knowledge management in tourism and in public tourism policy in particular. Knowledge in large public administrations can be fragmented, yet it represents an essential part of society’s intellectual capital. Of particular interest are the following expressions of the relationships between knowledge, its management, tourism, public policy and wider society (although other themes/perspectives are also welcome):

  • Culture, diversity and knowledge management
  • Knowledge management and public policy
  • Knowledge management and organisational learning and change
  • Inter-organisational knowledge networks and sharing: knowledge cities, - regions and tourism
  • Knowledge management for social change and innovation
  • The role of knowledge in change management
  • Knowledge and strategic management
  • Knowledge and innovation

4. Proposed schedule:

  • Expression of interest by June 2nd 2016:

300-500 Words outlining the main argument of the proposed paper.

  • Submission deadline: November 15, 2016
  • Papers reviewed: February 28, 2017
  • Revised papers reviewed and accepted: April 30, 2017
  • Final versions of accepted papers delivered: June 30, 2017
  • All manuscripts will be double-blind reviewed
  • Please read the publication style guidelines before submitting your paper
  • Go here to register/or log on to submit your paper to ManuscriptCentral
  • If you have any question about the special issue or your intended submission, please contact Jan Mosedale.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: ATLAS Annual Conference Special Track: Changing Lifestyles and Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) - Canterbury, UK, 14-16 September

ATLAS Annual Conference 2016

Tourism, Lifestyles and Locations

Canterbury, United Kingdom

13-16 September, 2016

Special Track: Changing Lifestyles and Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)

Led by Professor Kevin Hannam, Dr Cody Morris Paris and Jihane Adeimi

Since the “Arab Spring”, the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) has experienced widespread conflicts and changes in the political, economic and socio-cultural arenas. At the same time, international tourism has continued to play a significant role in some Arabic countries in the face of new risks, while Halal tourism lifestyles and performances have been developed, following the rise of domestic tourism in the region. Previous research have examined aspects of cultural and heritage tourism and urban tourism development (Daher, 2007) as well as the wider geopolitics and mobilities in this region (Hazburn, 2008). This special track aims to give researchers a platform to discuss more recent tourism developments and changing lifestyles in the MENA region.

We therefore welcome high quality abstracts on a variety of themes, including:

·         Developments in Halal/Islamic tourism and marketing in the MENA region

·         Changing lifestyles, mobilities and tourism performances in the MENA region

·         Changing host-guest relations in the MENA region

·         New tourist destinations and urban tourism developments in the MENA region

·         The politics of events in the MENA region

·         Changing tourism policies and strategies in the MENA region

·         The impact of risks on tourism in the MENA region

The convenors are currently looking at possibilities for publication.

Abstract submission for the ATLAS annual conference is very successful until now. Still we are going to extend the deadline one more time, since many people are asking for that! Please submit your abstracts for the conference, special tracks and/or the PhD seminar before May 7th 2016.

Be sure not miss the 25th anniversary conference in Canterbury!!!
