2014 ATHE ANNUAL CONFERENCE AND DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM - CALL FOR PAPERS

THE ASSOCIATION FOR TOURISM IN HIGHER EDUCATION 2014 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
CO-CREATION IN TOURISM TEACHING & LEARNING
4th-5th December 2014, The Royal Society of Edinburgh

Web: http://www.athe.org.uk/conference/

(hosted by Edinburgh Napier University)

This year, our theme is co-creation in tourism teaching and learning. This theme picks up on aspects such as how courses and learning activities are collaboratively designed, delivered and experienced by integrating practice into teaching to reduce disconnects between teaching and industry. As such, this might include students, industry partners or other institutions as co-creators.

Our keynote speakers from both industry and higher education will provide us with the opportunity to reflect on our co-creation experiences.

We have also introduced a PhD Colloquium to encourage students to present at an established conference, meet potential employers and get constructive feedback in a friendly, supportive environment.

The emphasis at the conference is on encouraging discussion and debate, so we ask you to present for just TEN minutes using no more than 3 PowerPoint slides; there will then be a further 10 minutes for discussion of your paper.

CONFERENCE THEMES
We welcome abstracts around the following themes:

  1. Co-creation of the curriculum: Students, industry and other institutions as co-creators of the curriculum, e.g. industrial work placement experiences, consultancy-style projects.
  2. Co-creation of the learning experience: Students, industry and other organisations as co-creators of the learning experience, e.g. field trips, innovative seminars or group work.
  3. Co-creation of assessment: Students, industry and other institutions as co-creators of assessment tasks, e.g. self or peer assessment, assessment by industry partners, co-production of assessment tasks.
  4. Co-creation in professional development: Engagement with industry and other institutions as co-creators of continuing professional development, e.g. Employer Advisory Panels, Strategic Insight Programmes (SIP), Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), teaching exchanges, staff industry placements.
  5. PhD Colloquium: Progress in Tourism & Events

Abstracts should include background, practical implications, methods and/or data sources, and indicative findings of the paper. They should be submitted by email to secretary@athe.org.uk by 1st October 2014 using the attached abstract form. All abstracts will be subject to a review process.

DOCTORAL COLLOQUIUM: ‘PROGRESS IN TOURISM AND EVENTS’

Following from enthusiastic feedback received by PhD students who have previously attended, ATHE have decided to encourage greater doctoral participation by organising this doctoral colloquium. The colloquium will provide an opportunity for PhD students to present their research related to the broad subject of ‘Progress in Tourism and Events’.

Doctoral students that have attended the conference in the past found this experience particularly helpful in:

  • Introducing them to some of the challenges and opportunities faced by higher education Tourism educators today;
  • Facilitating social interaction with potential future employers in a friendly and welcoming environment;
  • Allowing them to present their research at an established conference and receive constructive, non-judgemental feedback.
  • Learning about new, creative, successful teaching techniques

This doctoral colloquium will be an integral part of the conference, whose theme this year is ‘Co-creation in tourism teaching and learning’. The theme picks up on aspects such as how courses and learning activities are collaboratively designed, delivered and experienced by integrating practice into teaching to connect both teaching and industry. Therefore includes an eclectic range of stakeholders, including student’s industry partners or other institutions as co-creators.

Talk format:

The emphasis at the conference is on encouraging discussion and debate - 10 minute presentations, 3 presentation slides MAX followed by a 10 minute Q+A discussion

Our keynote speakers from both industry and higher education will provide participants with the opportunity to reflect on their own co-creation experiences. After the conference, each presenting delegate’s slides and abstract will be brought together and published, with an ISSN number. This allows rapid publication and maximum dissemination of presenters’ ideas.

Abstracts should be submitted by email to secretary@athe.org.uk by 1st October 2014 using the attached PhD Colloquium abstract form.
